Halo Flashpoint

halo wargaming review

Halo Flashpoint is a miniature skirmish game set in the Halo universe designed by Mantic Games. I’ve had my eye on it for a while now but due to missing the initial hype wasn’t able to find a copy of the Spartan edition in stock anywhere. I finally decided to just bite the bullet and get the smaller Recon edition of the game, only to then find a copy of the Spartan Edition available at Dark Star Games.

In a moment of consumerism I bought both…

Fortunately this turned out to be a good decision as I really like this game. It checks a lot of the boxes that other skirmish/war games don’t quite manage to, namely:

I’ve only played 3 games so far but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The mechanics recreate the frenetic feeling of firefights in the original combat evolved multiplayer. There’s basically no down time for players while they wait for the other person to move their models and the headshot mechanic is as fun as endlessly exploding dice can be.

As an example, I played a game with my son and he managed to use up all of his dice and half of mine thanks to the optics keyword on the spartan deadeye. Needless to say, for a 7 year old this was viewed as a major achievement as he gleefully one shotted my elite that had been dashing up the board.

When it comes to the production quality of the boxes I’m impressed. Though the models are PVC which isn’t my favourite material for models, the fact they come pre-assembled and in coloured plastic to allow instant play makes up for this. In addition the cardboard terrain is quick to assemble and looks good on the tabletop, with enough provided even in the Recon edition to get a good game going.

A final bonus is that the packaging actually serves as a carry case for the models, which means no more paint getting chipped because my minis slid around in the old shoe box that I usually store them in.

I’d definitely recommend picking up Flashpoint - I’ll probably do a follow up post when I’ve played a few more game modes and really got the hang of the mechanics.

  2. 40k House Rules 27-Dec-2025

Recently I’ve started playing 40k again, partly because pushing minis around is fun but also because it’s a good excuse to get a regular in person social event in the calendar.

This year has been a bit of a mixed bag for physical fitness improvement. Life is always a balance between different goals and I’ve certainly tipped the scales towards family and career over the past 12 months.

In the interest of playing more games I decided to offer to run a session of the Mothership RPG for a few colleagues… and it’s turned out to be a success so far. Four sessions in we’ve run the Haunting of Ypsilon 14 and nearly all of Another Bug Hunt (ABH).

Over the course of my Cy_Borg inspired cyberpunk campaign I made numerous pretend social media posts, headlines, and other bits of world building. I’m posting them here for posterity and in case anyone finds them and is inspired for their own campaign.
